JANE: Shot July 8

Take a deep breath, pause and release.

Here are the first steps to take when it’s time to move:

1. Prep.

Look at your cabinets, we know they’re full without even seeing them. There’s a lot to do, but don’t panic, you’ve got this! Time is on your side, you’re prepared so lets make sure you put packing on the top of your list and lets also make sure we start packing things that your family doesn’t use right away.

2. Purge

Put three boxes in the room you’re packing. A keep box, a toss box and a donate box. A good rule of thumb is, if you haven’t used it in over a year, it might be time to donate it. Remember, now is the time to purge. This creates an opportunity to save money on your move by getting rid of things you might not need anymore. With that said, moving is challenging for kids, so try not to purge their stuff. Instead, give your kids three boxes and let them decide what they’re willing to keep, toss and donate. If you want to encourage them, make it a competition and see who can donate the most!

3. Pick

Ask your friends and family for recommendations, and check reviews. Make sure the companies you call are licensed, bonded and insured. When you’re calling around you’ll need to have the address of the new home, square footage of the current and the new place, special items (grandfather clocks, china, piano, etc.) and ask if there are any other charges like fuel, double-drive time, or minimums involved in the move. Set aside 10 minutes for each quote.

4. And Pack

Who is going to be doing your packing? Some of our customers decide to pack themselves, and in doing so have found that our boxes are incredibly sturdy, and uniform in size, which makes them much easier to load into the truck on move day. When boxes are easier to load, our movers are able to speed up the loading process and save you money!  One of our most popular boxes is our wardrobe box which fits about two feet of closet space. You can also fill the bottom of the wardrobe box with items like shoes, scarves and belts. And, when the move is all said and done, you can reuse it in your laundry room, your garage in a closet!
